| BLUE FRONT AMAZONS | ||||||
| Presently, I have one pair of adults for this breed of bird. Unfortunately, we have yet to see any eggs. Pictures of these beautiful birds will be added soon! | ||||||
| The Blue-Fronted Amazon is very popular pet due to the fact that it is easily trained and very affectionate. They, along with the Yellow Nape and Yellow Head Amazons, are second only to the African Gray in the ability to speak. They can learn a very large vocabulary (with the ability to associate a meaning to many words), as well as mimic, sing and copy household noises (like a ringing telephone). The Blue-Fronted Amazons are known to have a softer voice than most other Amazons.
They average about 15 inches in length and require a good sized cage, no less than 24x26x24, but the larger the cage is, the better. The cage should be filled with toys, especially the type that they can climb on and chew. They love to climb and chew and, due to this, any time that they are playing outside of their cage, they must be well-supervised to minimize accidents. They are a beautiful bird that is very graceful. Their primary colors generally consist of green feathers, with darker green tips and they have bright blue foreheads with blue and white crowns. Feathers of yellow and red appear in various areas of their bodies, but different birds will have different “markings.” As with most birds, Blue-Fronted Amazons love baths and playing in the water! An excellent way to play with your bird is to keep a spray bottle nearby and give him a shower every once in a while. Not only will he love it, but you will love watching his reaction! Some notes of importance with these birds are, for starters, that these birds do have a tendency to be moody. It is important to be patient with them, especially around the time that they reach sexual maturity and around the time they molt. They have even been known to be “nippy” during those times. In addition, these types of birds (Amazons) can actual suffer from obesity when kept in captivity. For that reason, it is important to make sure that they get a well-rounded diet that is low in fact. This means to watch the amount of seed that they are fed! Always remember to keep your bird’s flight feathers clipped and their toenails trimmed. Lastly, these birds should not be bought on impulse and should be considered a life-long friend, due to the fact that once these birds form an attachment to one person, it is very, very hard for them to adapt to anyone else. With the fact that they train easily, are very loveable, playful and animated, these birds make excellent pets! They breed from October to March and lay a clutch of about 4 eggs that incubate for 28-30 days. Then, the fledglings venture out on their own when they are about 55 days old. This means that, if all goes well, we could see some of these beautiful babies early next year! We will let you know as soon as there are eggs!
